This particular fixed router comes with a set of standard accessories. You’ll get 1/4 and 1/2-inch collets, two wrenches, sub-base gauge, fixed base, and a user manual. We strongly recommend reading the manual because it will help you to comprehend the basic working principles of these machines. Even though most of them operate on a pretty similar principle, it’s always a good idea to check the user manual out and make sure everything is set up correctly.
As you may know, intense vibrations are on the top of the list of reasons why people get tired quickly while working with a fixed router. However, this one has the vibration issue sorted out thanks to the innovative and well-planned design.
All you have to do in order to release the motor is use the quick-release mechanism; it’s as simple as that. Furthermore, you can clean and service the motor without interfering with the over-molded part of the design that contains the handles and the body.
When it comes to precision and adjustments, it’s as easy as it gets. The adjustment ring is easy to use and can be adjusted to 1/64-inch increments. The sub-base concentricity gauge also plays a significant role when it comes to accuracy enhancements. Overall, you don’t have to worry about the precision of this model because it’s at a pretty high and satisfactory level.
Things We Liked About it
The first thing many people like is the ease of use. Even though it seems quite complex and hard to operate, an absolute beginner can learn to use it within hours. Also, the DW616 is probably one of the best “bang for the buck” units available within this particular price range. Speaking of price, the affordability of this machine cannot be ignored, especially because of the great quality-to-price ratio. Therefore, if you’re looking for a high-end unit with a decent price – this might be the one.
Materials used in production are pretty sturdy and reliable. There is no need to be worried about the overall durability of this unit because it’s made to last for quite a while as long as you maintain it in good condition.
What we didn’t like
As most other routers, this one also struggles with noise levels. It tends to be quite noisy, especially after a few hours of operation. There’s not much you can do about it besides getting a pair of earplugs. As you can tell, the solution is pretty simple and most importantly – inexpensive.
Some people didn’t like the position of the on/off switch. It is located at the base of the motor instead of being on one of the handles. While it’s not a crucial factor for the smoothness of operation, the switch position may potentially be a matter of safety hazards. Either way, some people prefer having the switch on the handles.
You can rest assured that this particular machine does its job well, and that’s what counts in the end of the day. It does come with a few minor disadvantages, but it’s nothing you can’t overcome within a day or two. The key is in getting used to its peculiar yet very functional design.
